I need to remove the loader (417 cub loader) so I can do some mows with a 6ft woods and a 5 ft hog. How as I understand it, after I remove the hydraulic connections I need to loosen the 12mm bolt on the pump and move this tab of steel 'backwards' to another hole. Correct?

Ed,
You should switch valve BEFORE you unhook the hoses(if tractor running). You are not supposed to run in closed position with hoses hooked up. Per manual it can damage your pump.

Im confused on this, I have 3 hoses coming off the pump, I figure one is the feed, the other is a return as the controls are open center, and the other is the return when the controls are active. right now the pump selector is on 'S', which is to the rear, and it can move to 'O' in the front. Been that way since I got it from the dealer. S= shut O=open and what you must move it to when no loader?
My reasoning is thus: the pump is running when engine on, since hte loader is open center, oil always flows thru the circuit - using it or not. when the hoses are removed, the pump itself must now go open so it can circulate internally to avoid wiping out the gerotor?
Am I correct? ....

Ed,
Ok, you have 3 lines, 1 "in" line for loader, 1 "out" line for loader and 1 is "power beyond". You have to have the power beyond to use 3 pt with loader. The S position is when loader is attached, O position is when you remove loader. Manual doesn't say what S and O stand for but I assume S is Shut and O is Open.
I have a Koyker loader but principles for detachement should be the same. Set stand, unhook back pins, slide loader forward to get off tractor and and then move hydraulic block lever to O then unhook hoses. Then lastly back tractor out from loader completely.(Thats my process) If you happen to unhook hoses in S position you will notice that tractor is under load and this is when block could get damaged. So the key is to move the lever to O before unhooking hoses.
Hopefully your loader has quick couplers, if not you will want to put them on if you planning on taking loader on and off much. I pull mine off to mow because of all my trees. Once you do it a couple times it goes pretty quick.
If you don't have the manual, you should get one , owners manual is $ 8.00 and Complete service manual was only 29 or 30. Well worth the investment. The service manual goes into all the detail on your 417 loader as well.

You are 2000% correct PJ Drew, I ordered the operators manual, loader stands and a *cab* - local place has steel cabs with soft side removable doors. Should keep me dry on those long field mows. It will also let me take the halogens off the ROPS and mount to the cab top improving forward/night vision (yes, I have been caught on mows after dark)
Also, there is no reason why I cannot tap into the cooling system and add a heater for winter plowing. Hopefully this cab will have room up top for an amfm CD radio and speakers..... :-) ....

ED,
How much do those cabs run? I'd been thinking it would be nice in my neck of the woods.

Take a look at Curtis Cab's website. They list MSRP for their products. They make a range of hard and soft cab and list a lot of toys////accessories:-) A soft side cab for my JD 870 is about $1000.
I'm not associated with them in any way, but I've been researching for a cab to put on my JD 870.
